Cuba: UN document on environment to be presented. 44992.jpegIn Havana there will be held today a regional presentation for Latin America's Decade of the UN Convention on Biodiversity and observance of the United Nations Decade for Deserts and Combating Desertification, namely the VIII International Convention on Environment and Development.

During the opening of the VIII International Convention on Environment and Development, Luc Gnacadja, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, will provide statements concerning this theme.

In the Palace of Conventions in Havana, experts from Cuba, Venezuela, Spain, Norway, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil and Mexico, among other countries, will debate for four days on the methodology, theory and practice involved the environment and sustainable development, highlighted Gisela Alonso Dominguez, president of the organizing committee.

"For the respect and the rights of our Earth" is the theme of this meeting which will be held in the format of five meetings, three seminars and it is also associated with a trade exhibition.
Climate change, protected areas, environmental education, environmental management, ecosystem management and biodiversity, environmental law, validation of hazards, vulnerability and risks, will be major themes in the four-day event.

These issues will be addressed at the VIII Congress of Environmental Education, the Seventh Congress of Protected Areas, the V Congress of Environmental Management, the Second Congress on Climate Change and Ecosystems and Biodiversity Congress III. Also there will be the III Colloquium on Hazard assessment, risk and vulnerability, the II Coolquium on International Law and environmental justice and the II Colloquium on environmental and spatial planning.


The sponsors of the VIII International Convention on Environment and Development are the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment; the Environment Agency; the Centre for Information, Education and Environmental Management and the National Center for rotected Areas, among other institutions.

The Environment Agency, together with other entities from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of the Republic of Cuba, is pleased to invite you to the 8th International Convention on Environment and Development, which will be held from July 4th to 8th, 2011, at the Havana International Conference Center, with the slogan "For the respect and rights of our Earth". The event is addressed to researchers, educators, specialists, managers, entrepreneurs and all professionals around the world, whose work is devoted to the sustainability of our planet.

This transcendental conference will provide a fluid and comprehensive exchange of ideas and criteria about methodological, theoretical and practical aspects related to the environment and sustainable development, in order to find better options to face and solve the problems involved in this wide field of study, which is more recurrent and necessary every day.                

             
The Convention is the most important international meeting on environment held in Cuba. Its 8th edition includes 5 congresses and 3 colloquia, which are related to various topical environmental subjects: climatic change, environmental education, protected areas, ecosystem management and biodiversity, environmental right, environmental land planning, as well as hazard, vulnerability and risk assessment.  


Several master conferences will be imparted by renowned experts of great prestige in the international arena. There will also be round table discussions on prime topics of the environmental agenda. Moreover, a fair-related exhibition on environmental experiences, technologies and projects will be carried out, as it has become customary in previous years.
