Russia Offers Nuclear Power Plant Vessel to Indonesia

Such a floating nuclear power plant has never been realized before
The Russian Ministry for Nuclear Power offered a floating nuclear power plant vessel to Indonesia during Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri's official visit to Russia. The capacity of the plant is 40 megawatts. It is capable of moving to various parts of an archipelago that are short of electric power.

For the time being, Russian and Indonesian officials have already conducted preliminary negotiations, and they are getting ready to sign intergovernmental documents. It is said that the construction of the nuclear power plant ship is to start after all necessary documents are ready and preliminary research has been completed. The construction of the power plant will be carried out in Indonesia. It is planned to be completed by 2015.

The ecological agency Bellona reported that the cost of the nuclear power plant vessel was $200-300 million. It was previously reported that the Indonesian government planned to have a 1,000 megawatt nuclear power plant in the center of the island of Java. However, the fate of this project is now in doubt.

The nuclear power plant ship is an experimental project that has never been put into practice before. The first such station is supposed to be built in the Russian region of Arkhangelsk, in the city of Severodvinsk. The Russian Ministry for Nuclear Power has already assigned the funds for the preparation of the technological and economic base.
