Russia Becomes Number One in Arms Exports

Yet, foreign specialists say that it won't last long

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Geneva Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation have recently conducted a research of on the international arms market of arms.

The results of the research caused wild fierce discussions in around the world. On the one hand, the arms- market research determined a pleasant fact for the Russian industry: Russia took the first place in the world on in the arms export, having left the USA behind. The SIPRI used special research methods for the research, whichthat reflected not the contractual cost of deliveries, but their military value.

It was said in the analytical part of the report that Russia would not be able to keep the its leading position on the market of arms. RAs researchers believe that, the decrease of in the financial support for the development of new arms in the 1990s is towill show its influence in coming years. This will inevitably result in the reduction of the competitive ability of the Russian arms. The orientation focus on only two trading partners is not considered to be perspectivea fruitful, in spite of the fact that they are rather large partners ones - China and India.

Nevertheless, the Russian enterprise for defense-technology export Rosoboronexport believes that there are no grounds for such pessimistic conclusions. As the The enterprise promisedavowed that, they would do their best in order to prevent from a the considerable reduction of the Russian arms exports. Rosoboronexport has largehopes about a number of contracts with Algeria and Middle Eastern and South-EastSoutheast Asian countries.
