Kofi Annan Conceded UN Undergoing a Crisis

At present the United Nations Organization is undergoing a crisis, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said in his address to the annual Moscow International UN Model 2003 Youth Conference.

The situation in Iraq, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the Korean peninsula and persistent, it seems, violence in the Middle East arouse profound concern, Annan pointed out in his address. Besides, there is also a pending global terrorism threat, the Secretary General added.

Besides these serious threats, there are also many humanitarian problems in the world, such as poverty, lack of drinking water and global warming, Annan noted in his address.

At the same time, according to Annan, we must not regard the time we live in merely as a century of threats as it opens a lot of new and wonderful opportunities. The modern world has all the necessary means and organizations, including the United Nations, to tackle today's problems, Kofi Annan stated.

Kofi Annan said the Moscow Youth Conference was a great contribution to the UN development. Addressing the audience, Annan expressed confidence that young people were already beginning to think on how to make our world a better place and turn the United Nations organization into a more efficient and sensitive institution.

The Moscow International UN Model 2003 Conference is held by the Russian UN Association and the Moscow State Institute of Foreign Relations under the aegis of the World Federation of UN Associations. About 750 delegates from more than 100 educational institutions from Russian and a number of foreign countries.
