I am disappointed with the European Union constitution which omits specific reference to Christianity’s contributions to the religious and cultural history of the continent. This was due to the opposition of several governments such as France and Belgium - Malta, Poland, Italy, Slovakia, Lithuania and Portugal being the few exceptions.
I welcome the constitution’s protection of the status of religious communities in member states and its pledge for dialogue between political and religious institutions. However, the missing reference to Christianity shows an undervaluing of historical evidence and of the Christian identity of European peoples. One cannot cut the roots from which one is born.
