Russia and Brazil to exchange criminals

The State Duma has today ratified a Russian-Brazilian treaty on extraditing criminals. The treaty is aimed at strengthening the legal base of Russian-Brazilian cooperation in the fight against crime. It controls procedures for extraditing suspects to stand trial and handing over criminals to serve their sentences in the other country.

The treaty sets out the conditions for extraditing, refusing to extradite and postponing extradition of suspects and criminals, as well as guaranteeing their rights. The document states that a person cannot be extradited from the country of which he is citizen. It also guarantees that the death penalty will not be applied to those extradited.
