The leadership of the religious party Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam in Pakistan has banned American and European journalists from visiting the area of Mohmand near the border with Afghanistan, which is populated by Pashto tribes. According to the Dawn newspaper, the head of the Moslem Religious Academy Darul Aloom Islamia in Mohmand Qari Samiullah said, "we will kill all foreigners who dare infiltrate into our territory." Pashto tribes enjoy significant autonomy in relation to the central authorities in Islamabad in this north-western province of Pakistan. They have their own police, and all disputes and important issues are decided by the tribe's elders council at meetings (jirga) and council gatherings (shura). In the area populated by Pashto tribes, pro-Taliban sentiments are very prominent, as the Taliban is mainly made up of ethnic Pashtoons.
