On the initiative of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre and the Indian embassy in Russia five Indian research centres will be set up in Russia. This was announced in the course of the meeting between Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee and indologists and representatives of the Russian public held in St. Petersburg. The Indian ambassador to Russia and rectors of the five Russian higher education establishments, where the centres are to be created (St. Petersburg, Kazan and Far Eastern state universities as well as two Moscow institutes) exchanged memoranda on mutual understanding in setting up these centres. The centres will engage in learning history, culture and politics of India, develop special programmes for teaching students and hold scientific and practical conferences.
