An attempt by UNICEF to administer vitamin A tablets to children in India has resulted in two deaths and around 1,000 children interned in hospitals.
In the state of Assam, North-East India, UNICEF carried out a vitamin A administration campaign on a reported number of 10,000 children. The aim of the campaign was to combat blindness, caused by a lack of vitamin A.
Unfortunately and inexplicably, the tablets had been subjected to intoxication, leading to high fever, vomiting and diarrhoea. Investigations proceed.
