International Reserve Airport Put Into Operation In Eastern Mongolia

An international reserve airport has been put into operation in the town of Choibalsan in Eastern Mongolia. According to the MIAT airlines management, the purpose of the new airport is so that IF can land when the Buyant Ukhaa airport in the Mongolian capital is closed due to meteorological or other conditions. Before the completion of the reserve airport, international and internal flights were forced to make emergency landings in Beijing or Irkutsk (Siberia.) The international reserve airport in Choibalsan is a former military airfield of the Soviet Group of Force in Mongolia. Following the withdrawal of the limited Soviet military contingent from Mongolia in 1993, the take-off strip was used by the MIAT airlines for landing internal flights. Now, the airfield is equipped with an airport complex and ground services complying with all international standards. The construction was sponsored by the Asian Development bank.
