United Nations Starts Delivering Humanitarian Aid To North-eastern Afghanistan

UN World Food Programme started delivering emergency humanitarian aid to population of the north-eastern regions of Afghanistan. On Friday an "air bridge" was established between the city of Kulyab in the south of Tajikistan and the city of Faizabad, the centre of the Afghan province of Badakhshan. According to the leadership of the World Food Programme, every day four flights are expected to deliver up to 80 tonnes of foodstuffs. If weather conditions do not interfere, in the course of four weeks they expect to deliver 2,000 tonnes of foodstuffs, mostly flour, to Faizabad. Overall, the World Food Programme plans to deliver to Faizabad from Tajikistan and Kirghizia up to 9,000 tonnes of foodstuffs which would help refugees and residents of the north-eastern part of Afghanistan to survive the winter. They also plan to use Russia-supplied motor vehicles to supplement aircraft deliveries.
