Mine disaster in Columbia

45 bodies have been found to date after a mine collapsed in western Columbia. At the time, it is estimated that 100 miners were working at the time. Attempts by rescue workers to find people alive continue, but according to official sources in Columbia, the hope of finding more workers alive diminishes with every second.

“During the early hours of Saturday, four bodies were found, raising the number of victims to 45 since Thursday”, said the prefect of the council of Filadelfia, Roman Aristizabal. Filadelfia is 300 kilometres west of Bogota, the capital.

The La Amapola mine was being worked illegally by gold miners who had used dynamite to blast a new heading through the mountain. Such amateur attempts which defy sound engineering principles are a tragic reality in much of South America, due to the nature of government in most of the countries.

Fascist and repressive oligarchies hold down an impoverished people who often do not have easy access to education.
