Russian Education System To Be Overhauled In 3-6 Years

When delivering a report at a government session on a concept for modernizing the country's education system, Russian Education Minister Vladimir Filippov today announced that a unified system of state exams would be introduced in Russia in three years. In addition, he said that a twelve-year secondary education system would be put in place in six years. The concept was approved. Fillipov thinks that unified exams would make it easier for talented students from the provinces to enter prestigious, including those in Moscow, higher educational establishments. When talking about the introduction of a twelve-year secondary curriculum, the minister reported that the pilot projects would be run over the next five years in some regions. These schemes would see new the publication of new textbooks and the use of new equipment. The proposals attach new priorities to the curriculum, with Russian and foreign languages being studied earlier, along with I.T. and other sciences. The minister also stressed that Russia was the only country in Europe which had not adopted a twelve-year education system.
