South Africa: police torturers to walk free?

The four police officers who admitted that they had used illegal immigrants from Mozambique to test their dogs’ aggressiveness stand a high chance of not being sent to jail. Their defence lawyers claim that this is common practice in South Africa and that since the jails are so full, there would be no point in considering the exaggeration of a prison sentence.

Illegal immigrants are used in this type of “training exercise” because they are less likely to complain to the authorities.

This is a typical example of a country in which basic notions of decency and respect for human life, if not civil rights, has been lost, the same one in which six adult males gang-raped a nine-month-old baby girl because they thought it would protect them against AIDS.
