Kamchatka bogged down in drug crimes

The Kamchatka region (a peninsula in the Okhotsk Sea, the Far East) is ranked 15th in Russia in the number of drug crimes per 100,000 people. The number of such crimes in the region is more than 40 per cent higher than that in Moscow.

These figures were given at a coordinating session of the leaders of the region's law enforcing structures, held at the local prosecutor's office.

In 2001 the amount of confiscated drugs in Kamchatka was 9.4 kg per 100,000 people, compared to 1,1 kg in Moscow, said Vladimir Tregubov, head of the department for combating illegal drug dealing.

During the first 3 months of this year 49 kg of drugs were already confiscated in Kamchatka.
