The Netherlands: Tulips found to be “environmentally harmful”

“Tulip plantations take up too much space” and are “environmentally harmful.” These are the assessments made public this week by the Dutch Agricultural Ministry in relation to one of the country’s most notable tourist wonders. At the same time, one may wonder whether or not residential districts and industrial zones, meant to replace the scenic flower fields, will be environmentally safe. The government is planning to move the production of tulips, narcissi, and other celebrated Dutch flowers to more remote areas, such as Anna Pavlovna, Haarlem, Flevoland, Zeeland Flamandia, and West Brabant.
