Fighting for the city of Kandahar where the Taliban headquarters is located was resumed Friday. The US Air Force aircraft are bombing the city and Taliban positions in the neighbourhood. The Northern Alliance strike units are being brought up to the area, said second secretary of the Afghan embassy to Dushanbe Shamsulhaq Aryanfar. According to the Afghan diplomat, the talks of Khamid Karzai, leader of a Pushtun tribe, with Taliban leaders on surrender of Kandahar turned to be futile, and the Taliban leader mullah Omar called to his subordinates "not to surrender the city". Evidently, the anti-Taliban forces will have to assault Kandahar, according to Aryanfar. He also said that the anti-Taliban coalition had liberated a number of towns and villages in the province of Kandahar.
