Anna Politkovskaya’s funeral ceremony takes place in Moscow today

Anna Politkovskaya, a Russian journalist, who was killed on October 7, is going to be buried on Moscow’s Troyekurovsky Cemetery today. The funeral ceremony will start at 2:00 p.m. Moscow time.

Investigators are currently working on three versions of Politkovskaya’s killing. The journalist might have been killed by police officers who were either jailed or put on wanted list after her publications. The murder could have been plotted by the enemies of President Putin and Chechen PM Kadyrov. The police officers also believe that she could have been killed by former Chechen terrorists, who took the side of the Russian forces. In addition, the police suspect Russian nationalists: Politkovskaya was mentioned in so-called execution lists made by the leaders of Russian fascist movements.

It has not been possible to make the identikit of Anna Politkovskaya’s killer or his possible accomplice. Witnesses’ testimony contradicts to images received with the help of surveillance cameras installed in the apartment building where the journalist’s body was found.

Investigators believe that there were two groups of criminals spying on the journalists before the killing. One was them was probably following Politkovskaya’s car and then informed his or her accomplice that the journalist had returned home. Forensic experts concluded that the killer let her in the elevator and then shot her in the back and in the head. The criminal dropped the gun and escaped from the scene afterwards. The origin of the weapon remains unknown as well: the criminals filed off the number on the gun.

The police officers believe that the journalist’s killer was not a professional. Most likely, the man agreed to commit the crime to pay back his debt to someone. “The killer used an unreliable gas pistol adaptation. When she was shooting, he missed once, although it was rather hard to miss under the condition of a small elevator. To crown it all, he forgot about the existence of surveillance cameras,” a police officer said. “Most likely, it was a random person, who killed the journalist to pay back his debt or commitment that he probably had,” he added.
