Domestic abuse in Russia takes a new turn

3 000 Russian women kill their husbands annually

Nearly 14 000 women die as a result of domestic violence in Russia, states Executive Director of the national violence prevention center “ANNA”, Larisa Ponarina.

“Domestic violence is a very serious problem. Statistically, nearly 14 000 women die as a result of domestic abuse from their husbands or boyfriends; nearly 3 000 women, after being abused for years, kill their husbands,” states Ponarina during a press-conference in Moscow this Tuesday.

“However, the official statistical data cannot present the overall scale of domestic abuse, since the problem is oftentimes rather latent. Many women prefer to keep quite about such cases; they rarely do turn to police for help,” added she.

As a result, International humanitarian organization “International amnesty” began its worldwide campaign to fight violence aimed at women. The campaign will take place in Russia as well, reports “Interfax.”

“The campaign's main goal is to raise awareness of women and men and the society at large, to stop violence towards women,” remarked Director of the Russian resource center of “International amnesty” Sergey Nikitin.

“The campaign intends to use a wide spectrum of law enforcement mechanisms and non-government organizations to fight such shameful phenomenon, that does not know any boundaries,” noted Nikitin.
