Russians favor premarital sex

The opinion poll shows that 13 percent of Russians do not have sex at all while 19 percent of them get it on more than three times a week. According to the poll conducted by the consulting company Biznes Reiting, Russians are theoretically well-aware of many ways of contraception. They are also reportedly tolerant towards abortions, and condemn homosexual relations.

The poll covered nearly three thousand residents (aged 19 and older) of five Russian cities with population over one million. The poll results show that Russians still consider love a must for agreeing to sexual intercourse, despite a debate about the plummeting moral standards. In terms of sexual relations, love is “very important” or “rather important” for 76 percent of the polled. On the other hand, 19 percent do not care about love for that matter. The Russians do not mind if their partners had premarital sex before tying the knot. On the contrary, many of the polled show a rather positive attitude toward the issue – 25 percent of female respondents and 45 percent of men, respectively. However, the Russians are far less tolerant when it comes to adultery. According to the poll, 49 percent believe adultery gives good grounds for divorce or split-up. At the same time, 27 percent disagree with the viewpoint.

Does the woman have the right to abortion? “Absolutely,” say 47 percent of women and 32 percent of men. According to 45% of men, abortions should only be conducted upon the express consent of the father of a child. Twelve percent of the respondents of both sexes are strongly opposed to abortions.

How often do the Russians have sex? On the whole, 27 percent of the polled have sex 1-2 times a week. About 19 percent claim they engage in sexual intercourse more than three times a week. On the other hand, 13 percent of the respondents say they do not have sex at all. The group mostly includes widows and widowers.

In theory, Russians know a good deal of information regarding the methods of the prevention of unwanted pregnancy. The poll shows that 95 percent know about the condom; 67 percent are

aware of the intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD); 66% have knowledge of oral contraceptives; 53% know about the creams and jellies containing chemical spermicides.

Many respondents are reportedly aware of such uncommon means of birth control as voluntary sterilization or a number of “popular contraceptive remedies.” In actuality, the situation is a lot worse than it purports to be: a mere 11 percent are on the pill; 9 percent use the IUCD, while 18% of the polled practice coitus interruptus, and one-tenths use the rhythm method. A quarter of the respondents do not use any means of contraception at all.
