Prostitution in Northern Caucasus Grows Despite Traditions

The struggle to survive does not give people an opportunity to raise the young generation properly

The sex industry is developing in the republics of the Northern Caucasus too, although they are known for their conservatism and adherence to traditions. For the time being, intimate services in the Caucasus are not so developed and open as in the rest of Russia. However, it is a very lucrative business anyway: such services are in demand always and everywhere. If there is a demand, there is a supply.

The prostitution scale directly depends on the size and the economic role of a city, in which it is based. In the city of Vladikavkaz, for example, the capital of North Osetia, the prostitution is developed more due to the city's geographical position. Clients are usually military men, shuttle traders, long-distance drivers and others. The sex industry offers hotels, saunas, casinos, private calls, but prostitutes do not work in the streets, like in the rest of Russia. Prices fluctuate from $10 to $100 per hour.

The "personnel" of the sexual service is rather mixed: local women are rather rare, the majority comes from other regions - Stavropol, Rostov-on-Don, and even from Voronezh. The main supplier of the "labor force" for Vladikavkaz is the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria. The reasons are rather simple: more clients and fewer chances to be caught in the dishonourable business. A certain part of prostitutes that work in the city of Nalchik come from the republic of Osetia for the same reasons. Such an exchange in the sex industry is practiced not only between North Osetia and Kabardino-Balkaria, but between other republics and districts of the Northern Caucasus too. There is another interesting fact: the national structure of prostitutes has considerably changed in recent years - the number of native girls has increased.

Why is the strict traditional upbringing cast aside now? Such things happen for social and economic reasons of the whole country, because of the moral crisis of the society, which undermines traditions, interpersonal attitudes and social relations. The struggle to survive does not give people an opportunity to raise the young generation properly. As a result, a nation loses its traditions, moral and spiritual grounds. A lot of people are preoccupied only with their personal problems, they remain absolutely indifferent to someone else's trouble. However, the Caucasus is traditionally celebrated for its strong traditions of friendship and family arrangements and customs. Needless to mention, what such a loss might lead to.

Women in the Caucasus are raised on the base of strict rules. If a girl's conduct dishonors her parents, all their relatives, friends and neighbors will be held up to shame. Luckily, the situation still remains the same, although there is a downside to it as well: an ambition to earn money often makes parents leave their daughters to their own. Everyone acts on the base of the following principle: "Out of sight, out of mind." A young girl may not be strong enough to resist the temptation of easy money. Working as a prostitution does not require a higher education, it is very easy to find such an occupation. If a girl is caught in the prostitution business, no one tries to help her return to normal life. It is impossible to fight prostitution, but if a girl was raised according to Caucasian traditions, she will never find herself in this business, not even in the hardest moment of her life.
