Electronic cigarettes are nothing but waste of money and health

Electronic cigarettes are also harmful to lungs, researchers from the University of Athens in Greece concluded. The report from the scientists was presented at the annual congress of the European Respiratory Society in Vienna.

Electronic cigarettes deliver nicotine through steam, not smoke. In this case, there is no combustion, but nicotine still comes from tobacco. The controversy about the safety of such devices emerged as soon as the devices appeared on the market. The Greek experts studied the short-term effects of e-cigarettes on various people, including those who did not suffer from lung diseases.

The experiment involved eight people who never smoked and 24 smokers - 11 with normally operating lungs, and 13 people - either with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. Each of the volunteers was smoking an e-cig for ten minutes. Afterwards, the researchers measured through a series of tests how the respiratory system could resist the smoke and absorb oxygen.

It was found that the airways resistance increased with all volunteers, who had smoked an e-cig for ten minutes. The resistance with smokers increased by 202 percent, and with non-smokers - by 220 percent. Electronic cigarettes block the airways, causing breathing problems to a person. In addition, they act as an obstacle for a person to quit smoking tobacco, says Utro.Ru.

"We do not yet know whether unapproved nicotine delivery products, such as e-cigarettes, are safer than normal cigarettes, despite marketing claims that they are less harmful," Christina Gratziou, one of the study authors, said in a statement. "This research helps us to understand how these products could be potentially harmful."

It is worthy of note that American scientists have recently found a dangerous substance in smokeless tobacco. The substance acts as a strong carcinogen and causes oral cancer, RBC reports.
