Assassination of Liberal Russia Leader Solved

Assassination of Duma Deputy Sergey Yushenkov, the leader of the Liberal Russia party is solved, Russia's law enforcement structures reported yesterday. Two executors of the crime were detained in Moscow; the Basmanny court of Moscow decreed to take the people into custody. Measures are currently being taken to find the client who ordered the assassination. The name of the man is not published in the interests of the investigation.

Sergey Yushenkov was killed in Moscow on April 17, 2003. A killer shot at the deputy four times; Yushenkov died of wounds right at the crime site. Political activity of the deputy was declared to be the main motive of the assassination.

Until recently, the investigation wasn't a success with defining suspects and motives of the crime. Several versions of the crime were suggested; however none of them was proved.

People who knew Sergey Yushenkov perfectly well say he had no connection with business; he was a politician not a businessman.
As of now, the investigation has finally given up the motive of a political assassination. No evidence has been found during the investigation to prove the suggestion that the assassination was committed for political reasons. A source in the law enforcement authorities says: "For the time being, a version saying that the assassination was committed because of financial relations is the priority one."

The two men detained yesterday on suspicion of committing the assassination of Sergey Yushenkov may be connected with the recently unveiled scandal of so-called werewolf policemen. The investigation found out, these werewolf policemen bought gas pistols, modified them for shooting live cartridges and then sold them to criminal groups. There is information proving that such guns were used in assassinations; it is reported that Sergey Yushenkov was killed with one of such guns.

One of the detainees suspected of assassinating Duma deputy Sergey Yushenkov confessed committing the crime yesterday, Gazeta.Ru reports with reference to a source in the Liberal Russia party (the party in which Yushenkov was the co-chairman). The source doesn't report where the criminals were detained, it only specifies it was not Moscow or the Moscow region.
