Russian women's ice hockey team won bronze at world championship

For the first time in history the national women's ice hockey team of Russia won bronze medals at the world championship held in the USA. In the hard-fought game for third place the Russian squad defeated Finland 2-1. Svetlana Trefilova scored the first goal at the 10th minute of the first period. The Finns (Karolina Rantamjaki) equalised when the game was 29 minutes old, but three minutes later Yekaterina Pashkevich netted the winning puck. Three minutes before the end of the game the Suomi players who had won the bronze at all the previous world championships removed their goaltender Tuula Puputti and dominated in their opponent's zone but the Russian players held out. Yekaterina Pashkevich from Russia ranks fifth among the best scorers of the competition, having scored ten points (six goals plus four assists). Canada won the gold already for the seventh time, having beaten the host team, the USA, in the final 3-2.
