Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel turns 52 on July 17^th. It will be her first birthday since she took office last year. She is married to Joachim Sauer, a professor of quantum mechanics. Mrs. Merkel’s husband apparently loathes being in the spotlight. Last November he did not even attend the ceremony on which his wife was sworn in as the new Chancellor. They have been man and wife since 1998. Angela Merkel divorced her first husband, Ulrich Merkel, in 1988. She has no children.

As for her style, Angela Merkel used to have a motto that read: “Those who have something to say need no makeup.” She followed the motto pretty accurately in the past. She used no makeup, wore baggy clothes, and her hair looked unkempt at some of the pictures. But things have changes since she was elected head of state last year. Angela Merkel hired style counsels and visage specialists who changed her image completely.

Mrs. Markel likes gardening a lot. She grows asters, marigolds, and kohlrabi. She also enjoys cooking. Mrs. Merkel is particularly good at making a potato soup, schnitzels, stewed fish and pies.

President of Latvia Vike-Freiberga is 68 years old. She is married to Imantas Freiberges, a professor of informatics at the Quebec University. They have a son and a daughter, Carlis and Indra. The offspring work and live in London. Vike-Freiberga and her husband look forward to having grandchildren.

The Latvian president is called one of most elegant women in the world. The fashion designer Alexander Bibergal and the fashion constructor Tamara Krylova are responsible for Mrs. Vike-Freiberga’s style in clothes. Mrs. Vike-Freiberga is reported to take active participation in the making of a new dress. She likes to choose the fabric and discuss the way her future outfit will sit and look.

These days she is looking for a man of her dreams. The 46-year-old woman is confident that she will find such a man.

“I’m a single mother and agnostic. I combined all sorts of vices in me,” said the then presidential candidate Bachelet prior to being elected president in January 2006.The Chileans seem to appreciate her straightforwardapproach both to public speeches and personal life style. The public will not be surprised to being told that she had taken a couple of days off to spend with her children.

She makes an effort in watching her weight though the task is pretty difficult since eating is one of her favorite pastimes. She has a penchant for paste, beans, and seafood.

Governor of St. Petersburg is married to Vladimir Matvienko, they met while studying at a chemical and pharmaceutical institute. They have a son, their only child, named Sergei.

Mrs. Matvienko’s son married the pop singer Zara some time ago. But the marriage was short-lived.

The 57-year-old Valentina Matvienko looks after her style herself. She pays special attention to her shoes, which are mostly Italian-made. Sources in the governor’s team claim that Mrs. Matvienko prefers wearing perfumes by Elizabeth Taylor and outfits by Cardin.
