A young white shark attacked in Bunker Bay, in the Australian Southwest. It was a female white shark: the species is the largest of predators of the sea.
An Australian surfer died after being attacked by a shark in the waters of Bunker Bay in southwestern Australia this weekend. According to the Australian press, Kyle Bruden, 21-years old, was almost entirely eaten from the legs down after being attacked by what experts believe to be a white shark, one of the largest marine predators that exists.
Witnesses and friends who were present at the time of the incident and who mourned the loss reported to Australian newspapers and TV a feeling of terror to have come so close to death.
Kyle Smith, 25, was surfing at the same location when he saw what looked like a whale. According to what he told 6PR radio and TV station, Channel 9, a group of dolphins was behaving strangely.
"A girl was swimming behind me. She cried out saying that she thought there was a dolphin behind him," he said.
"We looked and it was not a dolphin. We were fully convinced that it was a whale. The animal went under and headed toward a group of about 15 surfers," he said.
The fast attack caused panic in the water. Severely wounded and a large part of the lower limbs torn, Kyle was taken to shore by friends, but succumbed to his injuries.
Shock
The Boneyards region, where the attack occurred, is popular among Australian surfers. On Monday, the beach remained closed to swimming.
At the spot where Kyle died, friends buried a surfboard in the sand and left flowers and tributes.
The death of the young man has prompted calls for the authorities to hunt for the shark, but the department responsible for the Coast Guard said that any shark would be frightened by the ships.
Experts say the presence of whales, dolphins and other fish cause the bay area to present "perfect conditions for sharks."
According to the Australian TV Channel 9, the incident left the community near Boneyards in "total shock."
