The deaths, in Guangdong province's Wuhua county, were the first reported from the storm, which brought gales and torrential rains accross a wide swathe of the northern Philippines and Taiwan before grinding into China's Fujian province Tuesday night.
The Web site of the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters reported the deaths, and an official with the county flood control office confirmed them.
The official, who gave only his surname, Wang, said he had no other details about the deaths, but said direct damages in the county from the storm were estimated at about US$8.8 million, the AP reports.
