Portugal 's police seized more than two tons of cocaine aboard a merchant ship in their second major drug bust in four days, authorities said Monday. Police units supported by the Navy and Air Force intercepted the Panamanian-registered Luna del Mar in the Atlantic Ocean around dawn Sunday, a police statement said.
Detectives boarded the freighter and found more than 100 bales of cocaine, according to the statement. The crew was taken into custody.
The statement provided no further information, but police said they would give further details later Monday.
Last Thursday, police seized nearly three tons of cocaine in a raid on a house in northern Portugal.
Police say the Iberian peninsula is a major entry point into Europe for international drug smugglers, reports the AP.
