The President of Afghanistan Burhanuddin Rabbani said that the Northern Alliance forces would enter Kabul after the Taliban were defeated. According to Rabbani, the Northern Alliance is going "to seize the hills around Kabul and after the Taliban are driven out of the city, leave only security forces in the capital". He said in an interview with the Saudi Asharq Al-Awsat paper that the alliance "was exerting military pressure" on the Taliban forces in several Northern provinces, in the central province of Ghowr, as well as in direct proximity to the Afghani capital. President of the internationally recognized Islamic State of Afghanistan said that the commonly used name "Northern Alliance" was not correct - the official title is "The United Islamic Front for the Salvation of Afghanistan". It includes groups and organizations from the north of the country along with those from south and east. The front not only performs the military command over its forces, but also the political leadership. While responding to the question about his attitude to ex-king Mohammad Zakhir Shah, Rabbani said that he welcomed his return to the political arena of Afghanistan, but he opposed restoration of monarchy. Rabbani underscored that he supported the former king's proposal to form Loya Jirga, a traditional Afghani institution of representation, in order to create an interim government.
