According to Palestinian sources, at least five Palestinians were killed, including four policemen, during the shelling by Israeli tanks of the northern part of the Gaza Strip on Wednesday. They were killed when a shell hit the Palestinian check-point in Beit Lahiya settlement on the Northern outskirts of the Strip. Israeli tanks attacked the Gaza Strip after two Israelis (residents of a settlement in the North of the Strip) were killed in an armed action by the Palestinians on Tuesday evening. Responsibility for the action was claimed by the Palestinian Islamic movement HAMAS (Islamic resistance movement). According to the Israeli side, the tank attack, as a result of which Israeli soldiers invaded up to 1 km deep into Palestinian territory, was carried out for the purpose of defending Israeli settlements.
