Fanchini wins first World Cup gold

Elena Fanchini of Italy won the women's World Cup downhill on Friday for her first career victory. Fanchini timed 1 minute, 49.33 seconds, heading off Austrians Michaela Dorfmeister, second in 1:49.43, and Alexandra Meissnitzer, third in 1:49.61.

Italian skier Lucia Recchia crashed during the race, going head first through a gate before sliding under the safety fence. She was airlifted off the course, and her condition was not immediately available, AP reports.
