Most Russians do not foresee peace in Chechnya in near future

Most Russians (53%) believe that Chechnya will only return to normal life in the distant future. This was the result of a national survey carried out by ROMIR Monitoring. 18% of respondents said they are convinced that positive changes in Chechnya will only come about in 6-10 years while 14% say it will take just 3-5 years. Interestingly, 6% of respondents claim that things will return to normal in the republic within the space of the next year.

The most pessimistic respondents tended to be people with a high income and higher education as well as managers and servicemen. Also, 62% of respondents disapprove of the federal administration in Chechnya while 31% believe the central government followed the correct course in its policy on Chechnya.
