Gazprom has purchased unsold gas from independent gas producers that was accumulated in backbone gas pipelines, a source in the Russian gas holding told RBC. The source did not specify the exact volume of the gas bought, however, according to some estimations, it could be several millions of cubic meters. Gazprom did not elaborate on the price it paid for the gas. Earlier Gazprom Deputy CEO Alexander Ryazanov declared that Gazprom had proposed to buy this gas at $20 per 1,000 cubic meters.
As reported earlier, Gazprom shut off Nortgaz's access to the system of backbone gas pipelines. According to data available on October 1, 2003, some 1.8bn cubic meters of gas of independent producers were accumulated in the system of backbone gas pipelines.
