Russian Peacekeepers to Be Pulled out from the Balkans

The peacekeepers of the Russian Defence Ministry will be pulled out from the Balkans in the near future, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Anatoly Kvashnin said.

He stated that the decision to withdraw the peacekeepers from Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina had been already made.

Kvashnin said that no military projects were planned in the region.

He pointed out that Interior Ministry staff would remain there. The withdrawal will have a positive effect on the ministry's financial situation.

26.9 million dollars a year were needed to maintain the Russian peacekeeping contingent on the Balkans. This money will now be used to meet domestic needs. Kvashnin said that the withdrawal schedule was being agreed with NATO, while the withdrawal itself will take 1-2 months.
