Events To Mark Fyodor Dostoyevsky's 180-th Birthday Anniversary Open In Omsk

The city of Omsk (Eastern Siberia) has opened nation-wide events dedicated to the great Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky's 180-th birthday anniversary. In his youth Dostoyevsky happened to spend a few years in a hard labour prison near Omsk for participation in an illegal revolutionary society. `The World of Dostoyevsky` Exhibition opened in the Omsk House of Artists. Dostoyevsky's words "Every human being is as deep and unfathomable as the sea, particularly the nervous human being of today" were chosen as the Exhibition's epigraph. In the context of the anniversary events, the Omsk State Musical Theatre will present its "The Forgetful Groom" performance based on Dostoyevsky's novel "The Uncle's Dream". The regional Pushkin Library will hold a week-long conference of literary scholars specializing in the study of Dostoyevsky's work and life. On Monday, November 12, 2001, Omsk will also see the opening of a monument to Fyodor Dostoyevsky.
