Anatoly Chubais says Sochi’s mountain ski resort will improve the city's power supply

The construction of an electric power station at the mountain ski resort of Krasnaya Polyana (Red Meadow) will allow for the supply of electric power to the complex itself and also to considerably improve the electric power supply to the city of Sochi, which is a resort city on the coast of the Black Sea. This was stated by Anatoly Chubais, the head of RAO United Energy System of Russia (RAO UES of Russia).

Chubais left for Sochi today, where he will hold a meeting at the headquarters dealing with solving the consequences of heavy snowfall, which caused a difficult situation regarding the supply of power in the city.

Chubais said that the construction of the new heating and electric station was a part of a project connected with the creation of the mountain ski complex. The head of RAO UESR stated that the issue pertaining to the beginning of the construction of the electric power plant had been discussed at a recent meeting with premier Kasyanov.

The concept of the modern mountain resort was developed during the summer and was handed over for the consideration to the Russian government. Mikhail Kasyanov was personally in charge of the projection, pursuant to the request from the Olympic committee. The elaboration of the issues connected with investments was carried out by the Austrian company AMP together with the Canadian firm Ekosain. The cost of the project will cost $10-15 billion.

As it is supposed, the state will participate in the realization of the project, but the biggest part of the work and the spending will be done by the private domestic companies. Forty companies have expressed their wish to participate in the project so far, including the Russian holding company Interros and its director, Vladimir Potanin, who is a big ski fan.

If there is a large mountain ski resort built in Krasnaya Polyana, Sochi will then enter top five of the world’s largest mountain and sea resorts and Russia will get an opportunity to become a country that would host the Winter Olympic Games. Krasnaya Polyana is a Russian resort in the west of the Caucasus. It is situated at the height of 600 meters, 40 kilometers from the airport of Adler. The combination of the mountains, glaciers, rivers, and lakes makes it a place very beautiful place.
