Armed Islamic Group attacks Harchoune

An attack by an Armed Islamic Group on Harchoune, in the province of Clef, 200 km. west of the Algerian capital, Algiers, has provoked 26 deaths, according to Algerian security officials.

This is the largest number of deaths since the bomb attack on a market attack on 5th July which killed 38. The death toll from the last eight months is 900.

Algeria has been in a state of conflict between government forces and Armed Islamic Groups wince the election result of 1992, which was won by the Islamist party, FIS, was cancelled.
