Bulgaria's figure skating world champion in drunk-driving crash that kills 1

Bulgaria's world ice dancing champion Maxim Staviski faces possible criminal charges after testing positive for alcohol following a road crash that left one person dead and another seriously hurt, police said Monday.

The crash, between Staviski's Hummer sport utility vehicle and two cars, occurred late Sunday on a bridge near the Black Sea city of Bourgas. The driver of one of the cars was seriously injured and died later in a hospital, and the passenger - a woman - was hospitalized in a coma.

A blood test showed the Russian-born Staviski, who was not injured, was over the legal driving limit for alcohol, an Interior Ministry spokeswoman said, but declined to specify by how much.

Traffic police in Bourgas said an investigation was under way, but that Staviski might face criminal charges. Staviski won the ice dancing event at the 2006 World Figure Skating Championships in Calgary with his dance partner and girlfriend, Albena Denkova.
