Brooklyn man indicted in fatal shooting of one police officer Dillon Stewart, wounding of another

A Brooklyn man was indicted on Thursday on charges he killed one police officer and wounded another in separate shootings within 10 days of each other. The first-degree murder and attempted murder charges against Allan Cameron were announced during a court hearing. The 27-year-old, who is being held without bail, could receive life in prison without parole if convicted of the murder of Officer Dillon Stewart.

Cameron's attorney has declined to comment. But in a jailhouse interview published Thursday in The New York Times, Cameron claimed he had never owned or fired a gun in his life, and he suggested the slain officer was killed by friendly fire.

Both Cameron and Stewart are natives of Jamaica, The Times said. Cameron _ a suspect in the wounding an off-duty officer in a holdup on Nov. 19 _ was arrested early Monday after allegedly shooting and killing Stewart as the patrolman tried to stop him for running a red light. Investigators say Cameron fired five shots into Stewart's patrol car as it pulled alongside his own vehicle with lights and sirens turned on.

One of the bullets entered the officer's left armpit _ a spot left unprotected by his bulletproof vest _ and struck his heart. Stewart, a married father of two, was credited with continuing the pursuit for about two more blocks before he realized he was hit. He was pronounced dead about five hours later. Cameron was captured following a massive manhunt and then identified by the officer who was shot on Nov. 19, police said.

Police officials said a search of the suspect's car produced more than 50 small bags of marijuana and shell casings that matched the alleged murder weapon, a 9mm handgun reported stolen in Florida in 1999. They also said that during questioning the suspect admitted being at the scene of the shooting, the AP reports. A judge set the next court date for Jan. 26. A.M.
