Supreme Rada of Ukraine Consents to Sending Ukrainian Battalion to Kuwait

The Supreme Rada of Ukraine consented Thursday to sending a Ukrainian battalion to Kuwait.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma requested the Supreme Rada to approve the decree on sending a Ukrainian NBC monitoring and decontamination battalion to Kuwait.

According to an agreement signed between Ukraine and Kuwait, the Ukrainian military will defend the population and clear up the aftermath of the possible use of mass destruction weapons during the war in Iraq and will not be engaged in combat.

The 19th separate NBC monitoring and decontamination battalion deployed in Sambor (western Ukraine) has a strength of over 500 soldiers and 165 units of materiel. It is employed in case of ecological and man-caused catastrophes.

The whole personnel and materiel is supposed to be deployed in Kuwait within two weeks.
