Vice speaker of Russian State Duma Lyudmila Shvetsova dies

Vice speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Lyudmila Shvetsova, died on October 29 in Moscow. "Lyudmila Shvetsova died as a result of the illness, which she had been fighting courageously for the last several years," Interfax quoted medics as saying.

Lyudmila Shvetsova was born on September 24, 1949 in Alma-Ata. In 1973, she graduated from the Kharkov Aviation Institute. During the 1980s, she was an active member of the Komsomol movement. In 1991, she chaired the Committee on Women and Family Affairs under the Cabinet of Ministers of the USSR. In January 2000, she was appointed first deputy prime minister of the Moscow government.
In October 2010, she took the position of Deputy Mayor of Moscow.

In 2011, Shvetsova was elected to the State Duma from the Moscow organization of United Russia Party. At the first meeting of the State Duma of the new convocation, she was appointed the vice-speaker. In April 2014, she was included on the EU sanctions list.

Shvetsova was an Honorary Professor of the Moscow University for Humanities. She was awarded with many orders and medals for her work.

In 1995 and 1996, Shvetsova received letters of gratitude from the Russian president.
