Serbian Elections: Kostunica Ahead

Vojislav Kostunica won the first round of the presidential elections in Serbia on Sunday by five percentage points over second-placed Miroljub Labus.

The moderate nationalist, Vojislav Kostunica, received 31.2% of the vote, ahead of liberal economist Miroljub Labus (27.7%) and ultra-nationalist Vojislav Seselj (22.5%), supported by ex-Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, according to figures released by the Centre for Free Elections and Democracy, based in Belgrade, which admitted a margin of error of 0.4%.

Kostunica is set to win the second round on 13th October, becoming President of Serbia with the support of Seselj’s vote. Vojislav Kostunica is President of Yugoslavia, a position which has been eliminated with the disbanding of the Federation, after the definitive separation of Montenegro from Serbia. The incumbent Milan Milutinovic will step down as President of Serbia at the end of 2002.
