The all-Russian final of the women's US Open became a great surprise for Russia too
It is easy to assume that America has been shocked recently. The all-Russian final of the women's US Open became a great surprise for Russia too. The brief history of Grand Slam tournaments for this year reminds of the Russian tennis championship.
Anastasia Myskina won the French Open at first. She played against her country-fellow, her best friend, Elena Dementieva. Maria Sharapova became a global sensation, when she captured the Wimbledon title. Russian girls failed at the Summer Olympics in Athens, which also became a sensation in the sports world. However, women – especially Russian women – can be highly unpredictable.
When Anastasia Myskina lost the second round of the US Open to 17-year-old Russian tennis player Anna Chakvetadze, everyone thought that the Russian tennis stars have had it. However, it became known two days later that two Russian girls would play at the US Open semifinals. Elena Dementieva had to play against Jennifer Capriati and Svetlana Kuznetsova – with Linsday Davenport.
On the whole, Svetlana did not complain of anything. She did not make any confessions. She was simply a sensation in the semi-final. Elena Dementieva, however, complained of her injured leg, stomachache, fatigue. She stated that she would not like to face a Russian opponent in the final. Svetlana Kuznetsova became the first one to reach the US Open. She was not doing well in the beginning of the game, but she managed to take a grip on herself afterwards, which helped her win the match with the score 6:4. Svetlana earned the right to dwell on her desirable opponents in the final of the tournament.
Enena and Jennifer started the game on Friday, when it was a quarter to midnight in Moscow. Dementieva won the first set easily – 6:0. As it usually happens with women, Elena relaxed after such an achievement. Viewers could hardly notice that, but the opponent grasped it immediately. The second set ended with 2:6. The score of the third round was 7:6 – the match lasted for 2 hours and 20 minutes.
Vera Zvonareva and Bob Bryan captured the mixed doubles title at the US Open on Friday. Russian tennis players have occupied the States.
