The storm, with winds of up to 216 kph (135 mph), made landfall at the coastal town of Mazhan in Zhejiang province at 5:25 p.m. (0925 GMT) and was moving northwest at 20 kph (12 mph), the Xinhua News Agency said, citing weather officials, the AP reports.
Saomai, the Vietnamese name for the planet Venus, was the eighth powerful storm to hit China during this year's unusually violent typhoon season.
