Police arrested three Chinese citizens after intercepting a shipment of illegal drugs from China worth a record 135 million New Zealand dollars (US$85 million; Ђ 66 million), an officer said Thursday.
Police also arrested a New Zealand national after discovering 95 kilograms (209 pounds) of crystal methamphetamine and 150 kilograms (330 pounds) of pseudoephedrine, an ingredient in the manufacture of crystal methamphetamine, in shipping containers sent to New Zealand from China.
"This is the largest drug seizure of these types of drugs ever made in New Zealand and I'm extremely proud of the work of our officers," New Zealand's comptroller of customs, Martyn Dunne, told reporters Thursday.
Dunne said police believed international organized crime groups were behind the drug shipment, but did not elaborate, reports the AP.
