At least two soldiers were wounded Tuesday after shooting broke out between the military and disgruntled troops in East Timor's capital, a witness and police said.
A reporter at the scene said police spoke of three shooting incidents across the capital in radio transmissions, but there were no details. Authorities could not immediately be reached for comment.
East Timor has been plagued by unrest since the dismissal earlier this year of 600 soldiers from the armed forces.
The soldiers, who had made up a third of the entire army, say they have been discriminated against and threatened to wage guerrilla warfare if they were not reinstated with improved conditions, reports the AP.
