Police shot at rioters Wednesday to stop them from marching on a U.S. military base in southern Afghanistan in the fourth day of violent protests against the Prophet Muhammad cartoons, officials said. At least 10 people were wounded.

About 500 demonstrators in Qalat city threw stones at the police who responded initially with shots into the air before firing into the crowd, said Abdul Bari, the city's police chief.

Seven of the wounded were police hit by flying rocks and three protesters were shot, he said, reports the AP.
