Poland: two nurses suspected of endangering newborn's life by making pictures of it

Prosecutors in southern Poland launched an investigation Wednesday into two nurses suspected of endangering a premature infant's life by removing the newborn from life support to pose with it for pictures.

The nurses, who were not identified, have both been suspended from the Upper Silesia Health Center for Child and Mother, after the pictures appeared in two leading newspapers.

One snapshot shows a nurse with a tiny baby in her uniform pocket. Another shows the infant cradled in her two bare palms. Nurses handling the premature infants are required to wear gloves to prevent infection, the AP reports.

Hospital authorities say it may be difficult to establish the identity of the baby, as the pictures were taken in August. It wasn't clear if all photos were of the same infant or if more than one child was involved. A.M.
