Earthquake death toll rises to 865 in Indian Kashmir, official says

The death toll in Indian Kashmir from this weekend's earthquake has reached 865, a figure that is unlikely to go up much higher, an official said Monday.

More bodies were recovered in remote villages reached by relief workers Monday, bringing the civilian death toll to 794, said India's Home Secretary V.K. Duggal. Also, 71 defense personnel also died in the quake, according to the AP.

Duggal said 2,430 people were injured and around 5,000 homes and buildings damaged or destroyed in Saturday's 7.6-magnitude temblor. Relief has been sent to most areas, but some remote communities have not yet been covered, he said.

The death toll in Pakistan-administered Kashmir ranged between 20,000 and 30,000. A.M.
