Exit poll: Tusk leading Poland's presidential elections

An exit poll showed pro-market lawmaker Donald Tusk leading conservative Warsaw Mayor Lech Kaczynski in Poland's presidential election Sunday, but short of the 50 percent needed to avoid a runoff.

The exit poll released by state television showed Tusk with 38.4 percent of the votes, and Kaczynski with 32.1 percent. If no candidate gets 50 percent, a runoff will be held October 23. "This is a victory," a smiling Tusk proclaimed from a platform set up at the National Museum, where members of his Civic Platform party gathered. "I'm happy that millions of Poles decided it was worth going to vote, and that it was worth voting for Donald Tusk." His supporters chanted "Donald Tusk! Donald Tusk!" Turnout was 50.5 percent, according to state TV, reported AP.
